A senator builds a house

In 1907, state senator Vernon Caldwell built his family home on Vermilion Street, in the heart of downtown Abbeville. The house features high ceilings, tall windows that fill the rooms with Louisiana light, and a generous front porch facing Vermilion Street.

For generations, the Caldwell has been a place for gathering.

The Register

Recognized by the nation. Kept alive by celebration.

The Caldwell House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, recognizing its place in the architectural and historic story of Abbeville.

We take the keeping seriously. The house still catches the evening light through its tall windows, and the rooms still carry the proportions and craftsmanship of their era. But this has never been a museum. The register recognizes the house; the celebrations are what keep it alive. There is room, still, for yours.

The Grounds

Gardens with a sense of occasion

Around the house, the estate unfolds into the East Garden and the West Garden Patio. Today, mature gardens surround the house, giving ceremonies oak shade, brick paths and the kind of Louisiana light no ballroom can imitate.

Today

An estate, an inn, and an open door

Today the Caldwell is a historic estate and inn — six guest rooms and grounds made for gathering — welcoming a new century of Abbeville families, and couples who travel from far beyond for a historic Louisiana wedding, and who understand this place the moment they see it.

This house holds your day with a steady, practiced grace. Within these walls your day is safe — and you are free simply to live it.

The Table

The Southern Spread

A house like this deserves a table worthy of it.

The cuisine and hospitality of the estate are kept by The Southern Spread — the hospitality team behind everything the Caldwell serves. When you hold your wedding here, the team that keeps the house is the same team that cooks your dinner, pours the toasts, and looks after your guests. You build your menu with us, and the table is laid the way the South has always laid it — generously.
