A senator builds a house
In 1907, state senator Vernon Caldwell built his family home on Vermilion Street, in the heart of downtown Abbeville. He built it the way people built when they meant to stay: made to outlast the weather, high ceilings, tall windows that fill the rooms with Louisiana light, and a porch made generous for company.
A senator's home was never meant to be a quiet one. From its first year, this was a place where the town gathered — and more than a century later, the house still knows the sound of a porch filling with the people it was built for.
